The tax environment we live in today has changed beyond recognition over the years.

With the introduction of self-assessment, HM Revenue & Customs integrated with HM Customs & Excise, operating as HMRC. They successfully passed the burden of processing and collating millions of personal and corporate tax returns onto the taxpayer and in turn their agents. This DIY approach is being developed further with the introduction of MTD (Making Tax Digital) and further phases are planned in the future.

We are living in an environment where it is increasingly more important to organise your personal and business affairs in a timely and accurate manner to ensure that, not if, but when, you are scrutinised for compliance by HMRC, you suffer as little as possible as a result, and at minimal cost to you in respect of time and stress, professional fees, or further liabilities to tax, interest and possible penalties.

This shift in emphasis by HMRC has been enabled by a commensurate shift in their use of technology. They can afford to now monitor the filing of accurate returns with far greater efficiency and ever improved targeting techniques, including the use of their sophisticated Connect software which has, for several years, been linking and analysing information, as never before possible, with relative ease and speed, providing ever increasing enquiry success and investigation settlement revenues for the Exchequer year on year.

This environment is here to stay. With the advances in technology at their full disposal, HMRC continue to be more effective year upon year.
